Pre Prosthetic Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation and physiotherapy is crucial immediately after amputation surgery to avoid complications such as depression, joint contractures and pathological scars. Post-surgical complications could include cardio-vascular problems, residual limb pain and phantom sensation, oedema, contracture and wound dehiscence.

Physical therapists will work long-term with the amputee. The average time-frame to be fit with a prosthesis is 6-8 weeks after surgery but this may differ based on each individual case. After fitting the first prosthesis you would need to do further therapy at home or at the rehab facility.

The Ideal Stump and Socket

The Ideal stump is one that is well-healed, has good vascular supply, soft and mobile scars, minimal pain, minimal edema, a length sufficient for bio-mechanical leverage but not too long to restrict choices for prosthetic components, and large surface areas for distribution of pressure.
Your surgeon plan in advance for ideal stump before the surgery and physiotherapist/rehab team plays a vital role in shaping the stump by using proper bandaging or by special stump shrinker compression stockings.


A temporary prosthesis consists of a check socket [clear socket], means of suspension, knee (for above-knee amputees), pylon, and foot. This allows the prosthetist to make changes to the fit of the socket or to change the alignment as you begin to walk.


A permanent prosthesis consists of a much stronger socket and a more durable version of the check socket made during the fitting process. This is made typically after physical therapy has been completed. This is constructed of durable and flexible materials like carbon fiber, nylon, and resin.
